Busikong Greenland Multi-Purpose Cooperative
225 organic farmers from Upi, Maguindanao
Project Proposal: Implement a Center for Integrated Organic Farming System to contribute in reducing poverty for ARMM
Help the men and women farmers of Upi, Maguindanao move from corn farming to organic vegetable farming. Corn has been the predominant product of Upi (there are corn-themed lamp-posts all over town) but as an agricultural product, it is not anymore benefitting the lives of the farmers. With continuous use of synthetically chemical fertilizers and pesticides, the land is not as fertile and the corn model has left the farmers indebted with middle men and big corporations.
iLOVE has chosen Busikong Greenland Multipurpose Cooperative, a group of 225 farmers in Upi, Maguindanao, who have spearheaded the change out of the corn-grown model and into an organic model that is diverse and healthy with variants of leafy greens, strawberries, fruit trees, and other value-added products. This involves organizing and educating farmers even outside of Upi, and providing them with technical know-how with all-natural soil enhancers and pest-control methods
